fashion moments: job hunting

I always feel that job interviews are a lie... It's a joke to go there dressed as someone not even close to looking like me. Then again.. I couldn't go to a "serious" job interview dressed as I usually do because I wouldn't look professional enough to be hired.

It's obvious you can't go too casual, too sexy or too comfy.. but does it have too be so dull?.. I'm sorry, I'm just not a fan of wearing dark colored trousers, t-shirts and not so high heels every day of the week.

Two days ago I had a job interview.. and looking through my closet.. I realized there was only one option for me to wear. All my mini skirts, shorts, mini dresses were obviously out of the picture, so I had to choose pants.. but of course I only have jeans and one single pair of black trousers I wore ONCE like a year ago for a school thing.. so OK.. those were the ones.
The rest was easy, a short and really cool coat, black pumps and I kept it simple on the accessories... but I looked so weird... so not my style.

I wonder.. if I have to dress like another person every day to go to work.. does it mean that particular job doesn't fit myself.. or... does it mean I should grow up and start looking more serious?

I know I HAVE to look professional in any job.. but.. if for example, I owned a bar, a restaurant, a marketing advice business... or worked on TV, a magazine, in the music business... I could dress a little bit more like me... with skirts and jeans, the occasional leather jacket, more color, more accessories.. I'd be able to keep my purple high light on my hair!, wear black nail polish or not having to hide my tattoos.... if I had one! ha ha...

gosh... I just hate looking so grown up and serious... it's not me... at all.

drawing room: sing me to sleep

Inspired by:

The Smiths
"Asleep"

(...)
sing me to sleep
sing me to sleep
I don't want to wake up
on my own anymore

sing to me
sing to me
I don't want to wake up
on my own anymore

don't feel bad for me
I want you to know
deep in the cell of my heart
I really want to go

there is another world
there is a better world
well, there must be...
well, there must be...
well...

Bye, bye... bye

DIY: around my neck

The latest necklace I made.

It's all beads... just little rounded black beads sewn against each other. The necklace ties around your neck with a black satin ribbon.

I've been meaning to post these 3 dresses I made a while ago.. they're all strapless and lovely! ha ha.. yes I'm so modest!

THE LITTLE WHITE DRESS

cute embellishments on the upper area of the white dress: sequins, lace, studs,
pearls, beads, tulle... I went crazy adding stuff on this puffy dress.

PRETTY IN PINK
I went Jackson Pollock on this one.. dripping paint everywhere.
I used black, blue and fuchsia colors.

the september issue

I stayed in last night and watched the documentary about Anna Wintour, "The September Issue"; I must say I'm now highly motivated to pursue my dreams of working in the fashion industry; I'd totally go through the whole "Devil wears Prada assistant" to get where I want to.

Anna Wintour has long been considered as a very cold person; she shows no emotions, no laughs or smiles... but she does her work exceptionally well.

I don't think there's nothing wrong with being the way she is; I mean, she must know what people think of her but that doesn't bother her at all; every day she still gets up to go to work.. and damn does she work.. she's always traveling around the world, going to meetings, interviews, fashion shows, press conferences... and on top of all that, she manages to maintain VOGUE as the most successful fashion magazine on the planet!

In the movie, she says something that really caught my attention... she says that most people don't take fashion seriously, they mock it, they think it's amusing to see how others care about it so much when in fact it's just a joke... obviously Anna disagrees... and so do I. Anna explained they are just afraid of fashion; they don't know anything about it and feel intimidated by it.

Personally, it's not that I'm a superficial person that only cares about clothes and brands and jewels or the glam life... I see fashion as an art.. it is art; it's just amazing to see what great designers like Galiano, Lagerfeld or De la Renta (among others..) create out of nothing! Gorgeous gowns, beautiful shoes, delightful outfits they put together that make you feel like you're living inside a Fairy Tale or some sort of dreamland.

I don't see how fashion can be any different from paintings or architecture, music or theater; in the end, they are all different kinds of art... and the people that do it are artists. Fashion shouldn't be minimized just because it seems superficial... if you don't like brands or labels that's OK.. don't buy them, but at least give the designers behind them the credit for developing such exquisite pieces. Respect and acknowledge their talent, they are artists too.

Who better to promote Alexander McQueen's 2010 collection than Lady Gaga?

She did it again... the music, the video, the clothes... herself!

I totally love her!

the velvet underground

Velvet is so 90's... I remember watching Cher Horowitz wearing those short velvet dresses in different colors; we all wore them at that time.
Even though I'm totally digging the 90's comeback trends like grunge style boots, plaid shirts, leather jackets or shiny neon colors, I'm still not so sure about the velvet clothes... maybe I'll start with some purses, shoes or jackets to see how they feel and later on work my way up, into dresses, pants or suits; we'll see how that goes...

urban renewal: band geek

I'm a strong believer of renewing or altering clothes just to make them look new, different, more expensive and cool, and this black cardigan wasn't the exception. I managed to make an incredibly easy DIY renewing trick this morning, just in time to go to school.

A couple of weeks ago I bought some great embroided details and embellishments that can be added to your regular clothes and look instantly as something totally new. This gold arrows were perfect for my plain black cardigan; I was planing on making myself a black vest where I could place them, but I decided to sew them to my cardigan. And, if I ever want my basic black back, I can just easily take them off.

This is how it turned out... I loved it!

If you fail to find arrows like these or any other band geek themed embellishments, don't worry!.. you can easily make them.. just buy the ribbon and start shaping it the way you want them to be; you can make them smaller, bigger, or in any other color; add some military buttons or beads and gemstones.. go nuts!

drawing room: lonely bird

I'm just a lonely bird,
sitting on a tree...
amused only by the wind,
on that branch I'll wait for something new to come along...
There's no one around,
I stand on my own..
only the wind, the tree, the branches and me...
until the time for the cherry blossoms to burst again comes along...

can't wait!

I just can't wait any longer to watch the movie... of course, it will take ages to hit the cinemas in Mexico.

A while ago I did an essay about Coco Chanel for my french class; it amazed me to read her biography... there were a lot of things I did not know about this strong, independent woman.. suddenly I felt so identified with her, (and not only because she liked to dress as a boy).

About her:
1. She was born in a poorhouse; she lived in an orphanage until the age of 7; that's where she learned how to sew.

2. At 18 she left the orphanage and took up work for a local tailor.

3. She started out designing hats as a hobby, later on she opened her first shop, selling mainly raincoats and jackets; really fashionable ones!

4. She had a lot of lovers, but never wanted to get married. "Coco had affairs with some of the most influential men at the time but she never married which she explained with the words 'There have been several Duchesses of Westminster. There is only one Chanel' (when asked why she did not marry Duke of Westminster for example)".

5. She gave us the little black dress, the Chanel suit, the bell bottoms and l'eau de parfum No. 5.. thank you!

Quotes from her..

"Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening"

"Luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury"

"Where should one use perfume?" a young woman asked. "Wherever one wants to be kissed," I said"

drawing room: smother me with flowers

I only ask one thing from you,
and that thing is to kill me if that's what you're intended to do...
but please do it with daffodils, with lilies, with roses;
with all types of little colored petals you find along the way..
smother me with flowers..
choke me with their sent...
do me this one last favor and I promise I'll fly away.
